The origin of this piece lies in questioning the notion attributed to Socrates that rigorous philosophical dialectic can lead to certain knowledge. Would the historical Socrates consider such certainty to be mere shadows? Considering that Socrates' ideas weren't recorded by Plato until after his death, can we even speak meaningfully of an historical Socrates?
